The Latest: German election: AfD supporters cheer result
Supporters of the anti-migrant Alternative for Germany party broke out in cheers as election polls indicated they’d emerged as the third-strongest party in Germany’s election, and co-leader Alexander Gauland vowed they’d “change this country.”
Gauland promised supporters Sunday that the party, known by its German initials AfD, would stay on the heels of the country’s established parties.
Gauland says “we will chase them. We will chase Merkel or whomever else.”
Exit polls suggest the AfD finished with about 13 percent of the vote, giving them seats in parliament for the first time. The Social Democrats were in second place with about 21 percent and Merkel’s conservative bloc with about 33.5 percent.
Gauland says “this is a great day in the history of our party, we are in parliament! We will change this country.”
German Establishment Routed; Election Result "Less Market Friendly Than Expected"
The first sellside comments on today's German elections - which as a reminder was a disaster for the Germany establishment following the worst showing for the CDU/CSU since 1949 and the worst result for the SPD since 1945 with support for both parties tumbling since the 2013 elections...
"It looks like marginally less market-friendly than expected,” . I’d say this is in line with our expectation that the euro would pause around $1.20 vs dollar and then maybe retrace a couple of percent over the autumn.”
We now await other analyst observations which we expect will be equally dour on today's election result, and as a result the EURUSD is set to tumble once it opens for early trading.
