Bitshares hosts a decentralized exchange remarkedly similar to Poloniex. All the usual alts trade plus a few I have not seen before. There is an unmoderated chat room for those willing to put up with trolls, but there is no doubt everyone there is in one way or another interested in cryptocurrency trading.
The recent difficulties and frustration with POLO and BitFinex among others is helping BTS find space in the niche. There are a host of other features as well. Automatic payments using smart contracts being one of them.
As of this writing the market cap has more than doubled in two days to approximately 768,000,000. This is a lot considering after reviewing the website and searching the appropriate forums I find nothing 'new' to warrant the increase.

In my opinion the coin is a short term buy due to the increasing awareness of the cryptocurrency markets and a lack of stable exchanges. In the future I expect to see the supply of reputable exchanges to come online to meet the demand from the crypto trading boon. BItshares is also in partnership with Steemit which is becoming rapidly known as a convenient way of loading debit cards from a large variety of banks in almost any country. (key word being in 'partnership'-- they are not the only one).
This is a 'gold rush' coin. The product is good, they are doing everything right, and the decentralized exchange is certainly needed in the crypto community. However a double in market cap within 48 hours, lack of information of dilution of the currency and rampant speculation should encourage a cautious approach. In the longer term if the crypto boon continues it could be a very well placed investment, especially if it attracts anywhere near the number of users POLO enjoys. But is it worth a Billion USD at this point? It is going to be a few years before that question is answered.
In summary, Buy for a trade, tight stop, and be ready to get out. Longer term it is a well put together alt coin with potentially great adoption rewarding those who can afford to average in and have a lengthy view.
